| Established in 2000, the
Parrett Catchment Project (PCP) is a partnership
initiative in response to numerous local problems
arising from flooding. The PCP’s aim was to
tackle conflicts between land and water management
activities throughout the river’s catchment
to resolve these problems. See www.parrettcatchment.info |

the basis for an ecosystem approach and how it may
be used to make effective assessments of the benefits
that the natural environment provides |

|
Government policies that protect the natural
environment are diverse and do not fully integrate
to provide a sustainable future for the many functions
and services the environment provides to mankind.
If we are to achieve sustainable patterns of economic
and social development, and therefore meet the
goals set by both the UK's Strategy for Sustainable
Development and agreements made at the European
scale following the Göteborg Summit in 2001, then
a different approach to policy development and
implementation needs to be adopted.
The 'Millennium Ecosystem Assessment', not only
recognised the multiple benefits that ecological
systems provide but realised that policy and planning
decisions must also take into account an ecosystem-based
approach (EBA). The EBA provides a way in which
the overall health and integrity of ecosystems
can be assessed and the multiple benefits society
derives from them better described and managed.
